About the SA Liquidation Register

The SA Liquidation Register turns the weekly Legal Notices A of the Government Gazette into a searchable list of South African companies and close corporations that are being wound up or are involved in business rescue. Each entity gets its own page with its CIPC registration number, the Master's office and reference, the forms published about it and the dates those notices carried.

Why it exists

The Gazette is public, but a single Friday issue runs to well over two hundred pages and mixes company windings-up with deceased estates, sequestrations and lost title deeds. Creditors, suppliers, landlords, credit controllers and journalists mostly want one thing: to know quickly whether a counterparty has entered liquidation and when the meeting of creditors is. That is the job this site does.

How the register is built

  • New issues of Legal Notices A are detected from the public archive several times a week.
  • The text of each PDF is extracted and the insolvency sections are read: Forms J28, J29 and J29 (close corporations), Forms 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8, company notices, liquidators' notices and published court orders.
  • Only notices that carry a CIPC registration number are kept. Sequestrations of natural persons, deceased estates and trusts are discarded before anything is stored.
  • Notices are grouped by registration number, so every later notice updates the same company page.

Limits

Automatic reading of PDF text can occasionally split or join a company name incorrectly, and the Gazette itself sometimes contains typing errors. The original notice is linked from every company page and always prevails. Business rescue that begins by board resolution is filed with CIPC and is not normally gazetted, so rescue figures here are a partial picture.
